This page is dedicated to information related to the Aclara TWACS Advanced Metering Infrastructure(AMI) system being installed throughout the Butler Electric service area.
This system is being deployed for the following reasons:
Consistency in when meters are read (i.e. always read on the same day each month).
Improve accuracy of monthly meter reads.
Reduce risk of injury to our employees that have to read in all weather conditions.
Reduce staff required to read meters.
Offer customers more insight into their energy usage.
Assist in restoration of power during outages. The system will identify homes without power.
We need to deploy smart meters in order to be compliant with regulation changes made by the Federal Government.
Help us monitor voltage throughout the system during heavy demand so we can adjust accordingly.
The Aclara Two-Way Automatic Communications System (TWACS) Technology is time proven fixed-network solution that uses patented technology to transmit data over existing power lines. Aclara TWACS Technology offers two-way communication to electric meters and provides for timely billing, load control, demand response, and outage detection and assessment. This system does not use RF or cellular towers as part of its implementation. All communication is over our existing electric wires.
Below are the datasheets associated with the various types of meters and modules that are being deployed to make this system operational:

APPROXIMATE DEPLOYMENT SCHEDULE
Please Note new Schedule Below
Deployment for Bloomingdale and Butler
was delayed by approx. 6 weeks due to Hurricane Sandy
Kinnelon - Complete
Bloomingdale - Complete
Butler - In progress. To be completed by the end of May 2013
PLEASE NOTE THERE ARE SPORADIC LOCATIONS THROUGHOUT OUR SYSTEM
THAT STILL HAVE METERS TO BE CHANGED
DURING DEPLOYMENT, Butler Electric Employees (with proper ID and clearly marked vehicles) will knock at your door when they arrive to change your meter. If you are home and request a different time for changeout, we will try to accomodate your request. If nobody answers the door, we will proceed to chage the meter on your home. The changeout takes approximately 1-2 minutes per home and is no different than the power interruption you would receive during a power outage. With approximately 12,000 meters to change, it is very difficult to predict the actual date your meter will be changed so we ask for your cooperation and understanding during this process.
