The Borough has continuously operated an electric utility since the early 1900's. Electrical energy is purchased from various suppliers typically in 1 year contracts. Contracts are in place for power for the next 4 to 5 years. The Borough also has an agreement with the Power Authority of the State of New York whereby it purchases power generated at Niagara Falls and on the St. Lawrence River.
The Butler Electric Company today is a 20 million dollar operation, serving approximately 12,000 customers in Kinnelon, Bloomingdale, Butler and small portions of West Milford and Riverdale.
